Position: Glycoscientist

Terms of Employment: Full-time, Permanent, 35 hours per week

Language of Work: English

Wage: $42.50 per hour

Position Summary:

Sussex Research Laboratories Inc. seeks an experienced Glycoscientist to lead the development, synthesis, and purification of glycan-based products. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in glycan and organic synthetic chemistry, particularly glycosylation methods (chemical, enzymatic, and chemoenzymatic).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently design, plan, and execute scalable glycan production.
  • Conduct multi-step synthesis of carbohydrate-based compounds, including glycoamino acids, glycopeptides, oligosaccharides, glycolipids, and glycoconjugates.
  • Utilize column chromatographic techniques (HPLC) for isolation, purification, and identification of synthetic targets.
  • Analyze data using advanced NMR and mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Perform chemical and enzymatic conjugations to carrier proteins.
  • Keep and maintain experimental development records and write final technical reports on completion of projects.

Mandatory Skills and Expertise:

  • Extensive experience (Ph.D. combined with relevant postdoctoral and/or industrial experience) in carbohydrate synthetic chemistry.
  • Expertise in glycosylation, protection, and deprotection strategies.
  • Expertise in synthesis of mycobacterial peptidoglycans and their probes.
  • Expertise in chemical synthesis of glycophosphates as natural enzyme substrates.
  • Expertise in chemical synthesis of GlcNAc-PP-lipids and lipid-pyrophosphates.
  • Proficiency in analytical tools (e.g., HPLC, LC-MS, NMR).
  • Proficiency in bioanalytical assays relating to glyco- and bioconjugation (e.g. gel electrophoresis, colourimetric and fluorescence assays)
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic R&D laboratory.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in glycoscience with emphasis on carbohydrate synthesis and characterization.
  • At least 3 years of post-graduate experience in glycoscience within academia or industry.
